Deep-sea Hydrothermal Vents: Exploring Life in the Extreme
Horst Felbeck, Ph.D.
In the late 1970s, scientists conducting a geologic investigation of
the ocean floor in the Pacific Ocean made a startling discovery-deep
ocean hot springs populated by a host of organisms never before seen.
Learn about the fascinating research into what makes life possible in
this seemingly inhospitable environment.

Winds, Currents, and the Voyages of Discovery
Joseph Reid, Scripps professor emeritus
Modern oceanography has been built on a legacy of centuries of
seagoing dating back to ancient times. Join distinguished Scripps
Professor Emeritus Joseph Reid as he describes what the earliest
sailors knew about the oceans and how technical achievements
throughout the ages have allowed ocean explorers to venture to the

California Sea Grant: An Inside Look at How Marine Science
Contributes to Solving Contemporary Issues
Russell Moll, Ph.D.
California Sea Grant draws on the talents of scientists and engineers
at universities throughout the state to address issues that today are
at the fore of marine policy dialogs. Join Sea Grant Director
Russell Moll as he explains how the research and outreach of top-tier
marine investigators are applied to pressing marine issues, such as
fisheries management, sustainable aquaculture, beach water quality,
and marine biodiversity.
