2002:
- Inner Harbour Hospital, Douglasville, GA: $10, 500,00 total for a one-year study.
The development of materials and information describing the successful introduction of AAT in a residential treatment facility charged with the care of youth (age 8-22 yr.) with severe psychological disorders. The study will quantify the benefits of different animal therapy strategies with varying medical conditions. Animals may very well be the "healers" needed to assist the medical community in the successful reintroduction of abused and mentally disabled children back into society, to live healthy lives as productive citizens.
- Association of Professional Humane Educators
To communicate with humane educators around the nation, especially in isolated areas, know about existing and new programs available for professional humane educators. The purpose to network with educators with limited resources and share information to avoid duplication of effort and share professionalism in the quest to promote animal education.
- North Carolina State University -College of Veterinary Medicine
Environmental Enrichment in Captive Eastern - to determine if reptiles, in this study the Eastern Box Turtle, benefits from an enriched captive environment. Turtles will be monitored with physiological and behavior indicators to determine if turtles will choose one environment over another.
- Long Island Parrot Society of New York
The creation and distribution of free informational New Bird Owner Welcome Packets throughout Long Island and surrounding areas. The Welcome Packets are intended to reinforce and augment bird care advice received in pet shops, to pique interest in further education and to give owners ready reference to local avian services. The product will be prepared so that other bird societies around the nation can borrow the format and layout to replicate the effort elsewhere.
2001:
- UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA: $49,979.00 total over two-year period.
To medically quantify the benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) with hospitalized heart failure patients. The two-year study will document the reduction of physiological and psychological stressors in human heart patients with the introduction of visiting dogs, compared with human patients having no dog visitation. Physiological changes and blood chemistry data will be measured. This is the type of information is critical doctors, for the medical quantification of the value of AAT.
- Purdue University School of Nursing, W. Lafayette, IN: $19,039.00 total over one year period.
To study the benefits of access to Aquariums by Alzheimer Patients. Pilot studies indicate that aquarium watching stimulates food intake, tends to calm upset and frustrated patients and improves interaction with caregivers. Studies at three Alzheimer facilities over the next year will measure food intake, and the attitudes and morale of patients including the caregivers' observations.
- The Center for Growing and Becoming, Sherburne, NY: $ 13,000.00 total for one year.
The development of Animal Welfare Standards for resident animals in Eden Alternative TM Certified long term residential care homes for seniors citizens. The Eden Alternative is the North American leader in transforming "nursing homes" into living communities through the introduction of animals, plants and visiting children. Remarkable changes transpire when a lonely, helpless and bored senior resident interacts with animals. Under this grant, Animal Welfare Standards will be written and incorporated into all training and certification materials used by Eden Alternative programs.
- American Federation of Aviculture, Phoenix, AZ: $10,000.00 total for one year.
A curriculum development for basic aviculture standards which will be targeted for aviculturists, the zoo and veterinary community, groups housing birds, and the conservation community. The information will ensure that captive bred and housed birds are managed and cared for using the highest standards and best techniques available. The document will be circulated broadly.
- American Bird Conservancy, Washington, DC: $6,000 total for one year.
To help fund the "Cats Indoors" project to protect both cats and songbirds. This national education project works with cat owners and feline organizations to help reduce songbird mortality resulting from domestic cats' predatory behavior. Through communication, education and mutually beneficial cooperative efforts, it is hoped that responsibility and prevention will be the best cure.
- The Aquaculture Education and Research Center, Hampton, NH: award $15,000.00 total for 1 year.
To create and test a teachers' curriculum and protocols for successful use of aquariums in school classrooms to teach science, aquarium management and the care and keeping of ornamental fish. This is a national program that will be available to all teachers at workshops, conferences and on the Internet. Appropriate animal care and management lessons to teach our youth how to interact with companion animals.
