The Written Word

The Written Word is a publisher and book seller specializing in subjects related to fishes, aquaculture, aquariculture. We publish the Journal of Aquariculture & Aquatic Sciences, American Aquarist (last published in 1996), and CODEX of Fishery Chemicals. We are also design and create personalized journals and bookplates, and sell books.

The Journal of Aquariculture & Aquatic Sciences is the only peer-reviewed, international, English-language journal covering aquarium science and technology and the affiliated sciences. JAAS has been published since 1980 and is published on an irregular basis. The Table of Contents of recent and back issues are available here.

Anyone wishing to inquire about personal journals, diaries or bookplates can contact us for more information and pricing. Our journals are personalized and individually printed and bound to to insure a high quality book which will hold up to rugged use and which will stand the test of time. The paper we use for all personal journals and diaries is 150 to 250 year archival, alkaline (= low acid) paper. Each journal or diary is sewn and bound just like the finest editions of rare books. The bindings include various grades of buckram, as well as leather, and are available in a wide range of colors and with many different spine and cover stampings. Our journals are bound with spacers (when requested) so that business cards, clippings, etc. can be affixed to the pages without causing the binding to break and separate. We offer sizes from pocket size to standard journal sizes. Our journals are often used a laboratory notebooks and and travel journals. Others have requested journals which are designed for specific record keeping such as for recording about individual aquariums and systems.

Our bookplates are created with unique, personalized designs and are printed on acid-free, gummed paper. Designs are prepared to reflect the personality of the owner and the character of the library. There is no extra charge for the design preparation; all design originals are kept on file, and clients can order reprints at any time after the initial order.

Due to the fact that we publish a primary journal in the aquatic sciences we have the pleasure of receiving a nearly steady stream of review books relevant to these sciences. This gives us the opportunity to review some of the best new books in the areas of of interest to aquarists, fish farmers, and aquatic researchers. When we come across books which we feel are worthy of note we order copies for stock and offer these books through the Aquaraculturist's Supply Centre. In addition, we can usually acquire any book our customers desire whether the book covers aquariums, aquaculture, the aquatic sciences, natural history, chemistry, ichthyology (fishes), invertebrate zoology, computer science, mathematics and nearly any other area of interest. Our clients' book interests range from aquariums and fishes to autograph collecting and forgeries. Please contact us for your own personal book needs.

From time to time The Written Word offers other products and services. As we expand our product list we will drop in additions to this, our Internet area. We are currently developing an on-line access to our computerized library catalog and our Library of Congress cataloging scheme. When finally available this catalog can be used as a reference source for librarians, book collectors and researchers.
