*** AS I SEE IT ***

If it's February, it must be Spay Day! Long before I joined UAN,
I was volunteering with a great group of animal lovers to
develop and coordinate the world's largest one-day spay/neuter
event. This year has been no exception... and it has been a busy
month gearing up for our annual Spay Day event here in
Sacramento. A week from Sunday more than 500 volunteer
veterinarians and technicians across our three-county area will
spay and neuter nearly 1,000 dogs and cats belonging to
low-income families... leading to a vast reduction in the
shelter population in the area. The local event is sponsored by
many national and local animal protection organizations and
shelters (including UAN) and most of the UAN staff (and lots of
our local supporters) get into the action!

UAN is also proud to have written and sponsored ACR 113, a
resolution recently introduced in the California Legislature by
Assembly Members Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys) and Dave Jones
(D-Sacramento) and Senator Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo). ACR 113
will proclaim February 28, 2006 as Spay Day all across
California... a day to remind everyone that spaying and
neutering our pets will go a long way toward reducing
unnecessary deaths at animal shelters.

You can get involved with spay/neuter activities in your
community, too! No reason to wait for next year... check out the
web sites of Spay USA and the Doris Day Animal Foundation for
ideas on what you can do today.

Please enjoy this month's installment of the e-Journal and
remember to take action for the animals whenever you can... they
need you!

Warmly,

Jennifer Fearing
President & CEO

HELP US SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT LIFELINE

UAN's LifeLine program helps people help animals by awarding
grants for lifesaving veterinary care. Many people who apply for
LifeLine grants are Good Samaritans who find animals in need of
lifesaving care but cannot afford the cost of treatment.

In 2005, we awarded more than $50,000 in grants for vet care
for 296 animals. Among the animals LifeLine saved were Bilbo, a
stray cat taken who was taken in by nuns who could not afford
his care, and Oscar, a puppy who suffered a broken jaw in an
abusive home.

You can help us spread the word about this important program by
ordering five free LifeLine brochures and giving them to your
veterinarian, local humane society or friends who frequently
rescue animals in need and could benefit from this assistance.

*** FROM OUR IN-BOX ***

We received the following letter from Baxter County, Arkansas
Sheriff John Montgomery. Seventy EARS volunteers deployed to
Arkansas late in 2005 to care for nearly 500 dogs after Sheriff
Montgomery found them living in deplorable conditions and
arrested their caregivers on charges of animal cruelty.

"Words cannot begin to express Baxter County's deep appreciation
for all of your time and effort. United Animal Nations has
blessed our citizens with its presence and its compassion. Thank
you so very much for the commitment and dedication of your
organization in a difficult situation. May this small token
serve as a reminder that your organization does make a
difference."

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE

In December, UAN pledged a $1,500 reward to help identify the
person(s) who tortured a four-month-old puppy in Florida by
clamping her mouth shut over her tongue, preventing her from
eating and drinking.

Last week authorities in Pasco County arrested a youth and
charged him with felony animal cruelty. The youth had been a
"person of interest" since early in the case, but when four
acquaintances stepped forward with information, authorities had
enough evidence to make an arrest.

The Zig Zag Memorial Reward is given to anyone who comes forward
with information leading to an arrest and conviction. If the
Pasco County youth is convicted of animal cruelty, it would be
the first time UAN has awarded the reward.

*** SHARE A SMILE ***

Download this!

Powder is a rabbit available for adoption through the House
Rabbit Society. We met Powder through EARS volunteer Kim
DeWoody. She is a charming rabbit who needs a special home, as
her incisors were removed because of her malocclusion.

To download an adorable photo of Powder and make her your new
desktop background, follow these simple instructions:

1) Click this link to open the photo:

2) Select a folder on your hard drive to save the image.
3) Then on your desktop, right mouse-click over the background
and choose Properties>Desktop.
4) Click the "Browse" button and select the photo from the
folder where you saved it.

*** MEET & GREET ***

Meet Kelly Siefkin, UAN's program coordinator.

* Who was your first pet?
We never had less than a menagerie of animals at my house at any
one time, but I think the first few were Porsche and Mercedes,
two German Shepherds, Tony the turkey, Buttercup the hamster and
Snowball the rabbit.

* What is your favorite animal-related book?
All My Patients are Under the Bed by Dr. Louis Camuti. Even
though I'm a dog person, this autobiography about a cat
veterinarian who makes house calls in New York City is hilarious
and very touching.

* What is your favorite vegetable?
Since cheese isn't a vegetable, I guess it would have to be
mushrooms, jicama, cabbage or asparagus. No wait -- I love
olives!

* What do you love most about working at UAN?
I love that I can bring my dog, Rocket, to work.

* What do you do in your free time?
When I have free time, I love skiing, baking, tennis, sleeping,
volunteering and gardening.
